NLC India Renewables Ltd. (NIRL), the renewable-energy arm of NLC India Limited (NLCIL), has brought 158.83 MW of its 300 MW solar project at Barsingsar in Bikaner district, Rajasthan, into commercial operation. The project is being developed under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme.

With this milestone achieved, NLCIL reinforces its strategic shift away from legacy lignite operations toward large-scale renewables. The company has set a target to reach 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.

The Barsingsar project leverages Rajasthan’s high solar-irradiation environment and supports India’s broader clean-energy ambitions. While the remaining capacity is still under execution, this development positions NLCIL more strongly in the utility-scale solar market.

Key considerations remain: timely commissioning of the balance capacity, ensuring high capacity-utilisation factors despite dust and desert-region challenges, and the company’s ability to monetise and manage its growing renewable asset base.

Overall, this partial commissioning is an important signal for both NLCIL and India’s solar sector, underscoring increased deployment of utility-scale projects outside traditional thermal footprints.
