Uttar Pradesh is set to significantly expand its solar infrastructure under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with plans to install 25,000 new rooftop solar plants over the next two years.
According to government data, a total of 4,119 applications have been submitted for solar installation so far, of which 3,537 plants have already been set up. For the upcoming financial year, new tenders will be issued to commission 600 additional solar plants, marking the beginning of the next phase of expansion.
By March 2027, Uttar Pradesh aims to achieve a total of 28,468 operational solar plants. Districts like Aligarh, known for rising electricity consumption and increasing adoption of renewable energy, are witnessing rapid growth under this scheme.
Officials stated that the state government has directed DISCOMs to simplify the process and assist households in availing subsidies. Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, beneficiaries receive a subsidy of 70โ80 percent of the total installation cost for rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW capacity, making it an affordable shift to clean energy. The total sanctioned capacity under the scheme is 1.08 GW.
Households interested in installing solar systems can take loans with interest rates ranging from 6% to 6.5%. However, officials from the electricity department highlighted the challenge of integrating renewable power into the existing grid while ensuring stability.
The scheme has been particularly beneficial in rural and semi-urban areas, where electricity demand is increasing, and farmers are also adopting solar energy for agricultural needs.
With central and state support, Uttar Pradesh aims to position itself as a leader in decentralized solar energy adoption, boosting sustainability and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
