NextStar Energy, Canadaโ€™s first large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturer, is expanding its operations to include the production of energy storage system (ESS) batteries. Beginning this month, the Windsor-based facility will produce advanced battery cells designed for commercial and grid-scale storage applications, marking a key milestone in advancing sustainable energy innovation in Canada. The expansion comes as demand for ESS technology surges globally, driven by the rapid growth of AI data centers and the increasing need for grid reliability.

To enable this new line of production, NextStar Energy has introduced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry to its manufacturing capabilities. LFP batteries are known for their long life, safety, and stabilityโ€”making them ideal for large-scale energy storage solutions. This addition complements the plantโ€™s existing Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery production, positioning NextStar to serve both the ESS and electric vehicle markets for its joint venture partners, LG Energy Solution and Stellantis.

“NextStar Energy’s expansion into energy storage reflects the company’s ability to respond and adapt to changing markets,” said Danies Lee, Chief Executive Officer of NextStar Energy. “By adding to our portfolio, we are not only demonstrating our resilience and flexibility as a company, but also our commitment to sustainable innovation, and a lasting footprint here in Windsor.”
