Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy producer, has commissioned Germany’s largest solar-battery hybrid power plant under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). The Zerbst project, located on a former 41-hectare gravel pit, marks a major milestone in the country’s energy transition efforts.
Barbara Flesche, Executive Vice President for Europe at Statkraft, said the timely completion demonstrates the company’s strong execution capabilities. “With the Zerbst solar park, we have implemented a major energy transition project quickly and efficiently. With this success, Statkraft has proven itself to be a reliable partner for energy infrastructure projects and one of the most important companies in the energy transition in Germany,” she stated.
The EUR 45 million facility features a 46.4 MW solar farm capable of generating nearly 50,000 MWh of green electricity annually—enough to power approximately 14,000 households and reduce CO₂ emissions by around 32,000 tons each year. The project secured a market premium through the EEG innovation tender.
Alongside the solar installation, the plant includes 88 battery cubes with a total capacity of 16 MW and the ability to store up to 57 MWh of electricity. The storage units capture excess solar generation during the day and feed energy back into the grid during evening and nighttime hours. This improves the solar park’s profitability while enhancing grid stability and helping smooth electricity price fluctuations.
Final grid-connection tests are underway, although the hybrid plant has been delivering power to the grid since October 2025. The Zerbst project is Statkraft’s first self-developed hybrid renewable facility in Germany, reflecting the company’s expanded focus on project development. Statkraft currently has a pipeline of wind, solar and storage projects totaling 4,000 MW.
Construction of the plant was completed exactly on schedule within twelve months despite the challenging environment for infrastructure projects.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister-President, Dr. Reiner Haseloff, who described the installation as a landmark initiative. “The Zerbst solar park is a lighthouse project that shows how the energy transition in Saxony-Anhalt is succeeding. The innovative storage technology makes this hybrid power plant an important building block for grid stability and supplies reliable energy,” he said.
The municipality of Zerbst/Anhalt will also benefit financially from the project, receiving trade tax contributions and an additional voluntary municipal payment of around EUR 100,000 from Statkraft.
