Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverter and energy storage solutions, has partnered with Zelestra to deliver advanced inverter technology for the 273 MWac San Martín solar project, now the largest photovoltaic installation ever built in Peru. The project has recently entered full commercial operation and is set to play a key role in Peru’s national decarbonization strategy.
High-Altitude Project Overcomes Harsh Climate with Modular Inverter Technology
Situated in the desert region of Arequipa at an elevation of 2,500 meters, the project required technology capable of handling extreme temperature swings and low humidity. Sungrow supplied its 1+X Modular Inverter, an 8.8 MW medium-voltage turnkey solution designed for scalability and high efficiency in challenging environments.
The plant also integrates bifacial modules and single-axis trackers to increase energy output. With Sungrow’s technical and delivery support, the entire project was completed in just 16 months, allowing early revenue generation and improved return on investment.
A Major Step in Peru’s Clean Energy Transition
The San Martín project is expected to produce 830 GWh of electricity annually, supplying energy to more than 440,000 households and reducing 166,549 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. The development also created over 900 construction jobs, contributing significant economic value to the Arequipa region.
Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) plans to commission 14 solar projects totaling 2.5 GW by 2028, all connected to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN). The recent inauguration of San Martín by President Dina Boluarte underscores its importance in the country’s renewable energy landscape.
Strengthening Regional Partnerships
“We view Sungrow not just as a supplier, but as a strategic long-term partner,” said José Luis García, CEO LATAM at Zelestra. “Their technical capabilities and regional track record give us confidence as we expand across Latin America.”
“Sungrow is proud to support Zelestra with reliable technology and strong local service,” added Gonzalo Feito, Regional Director of Sungrow LATAM. “This milestone reinforces Peru’s clean energy transition.”
The project builds on a growing partnership between the companies; earlier this year, Sungrow agreed to supply 1 GWh of energy storage for Zelestra’s Aurora hybrid project in Chile.
Sungrow currently has over 1 GWh of contracted capacity in Peru and continues expanding its presence across Latin America through localized engineering, sales, and after-sales support.
