Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has chosen Honeywell to provide advanced technologies, services, catalysts, and specialized equipment to support a major expansion at the Lekki refinery in Nigeria. The partnership will help the refinery process a wider variety of crude oils and double its production capacity by 2028. This facility is already Africa’s largest refinery, and the planned upgrade will significantly expand its role in meeting the region’s growing energy needs.

Using Honeywell’s refining and petrochemical processing solutions, Dangote aims to increase its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next three years. Once completed, this expansion would make Dangote the largest petroleum refinery in the world. The increased capacity is expected to boost fuel production within Africa, reduce dependence on imported fuels, and strengthen Nigeria’s overall energy security.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, said that continuing the collaboration with Honeywell represents an important step forward for both the company and Nigeria’s energy sector. He noted that Honeywell’s advanced and reliable technologies will enable the refinery to set new performance benchmarks while supporting economic growth and improving energy independence for the country.

Honeywell has been supplying process technology to the Lekki refinery for almost ten years. The new expansion project allows Dangote to make full use of its existing infrastructure and equipment, helping the company maximize returns on investment and speed up project timelines.

Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, stated that Honeywell remains committed to developing innovative technologies that improve efficiency, enhance operations, and support regional energy needs. He added that the collaboration with Dangote shows how technology and partnership can contribute to greater energy independence across Africa.

As part of this agreement, Dangote will also use Honeywell’s Oleflex technology. This process converts propane into propylene, enabling the refinery to produce 750,000 metric tons of propylene each year. With this expansion, Dangote will increase its overall polypropylene production to 2.4 million metric tons per year. Polypropylene is a key material used in a wide range of plastic products, including packaging materials.

The Lekki refinery is recognized as the world’s largest single-train refinery and produces Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene. Honeywell, which has been operating in the energy sector for more than 100 years, has licensed its process technologies to over 6,000 refineries and industrial facilities globally.
