EWE NETZ, a subsidiary of the EWE Group, is investing over €26 million to upgrade and expand power grids in Emsland, aiming to secure reliable energy supply and support the ongoing energy transition in rural areas.

The investment focuses on enhancing substations in Haselünne and Esterwegen to accommodate increasing feed-in from renewable energy sources and strengthen long-term supply security. Each substation will be equipped with a third 63 MVA transformer, a capacity benchmark for regional grid operations.

In addition, significant line reinforcements will be undertaken. In Haselünne, new support cables of 400 mm² to the Westerlohmühlen switchgear and 630 mm² to Herzlake will be installed. In Esterwegen, a new 110 kV double busbar will be added, with additional lines and support cables connecting Rastdorf, Bockhorst, and Börgerwald.

“These projects in Haselünne and Esterwegen create grid capacity for current needs while laying the foundation for future growth, including new feed-ins and electrification in households, commerce, and agriculture,” said Ralf Kuper, EWE NETZ Regional Manager Cloppenburg/Emsland.

Beyond the substations, EWE NETZ is investing in new line routes, local network stations, and underground infrastructure across northern Emsland, including municipalities such as Bockhorst, Surwold, and Esterwegen. The measures are designed to facilitate decentralized power generation and advance the transition to climate-neutral energy supply.

With a total planned investment of around €26 million by 2028, EWE NETZ aims to enhance regional grid stability and ensure the successful implementation of Germany’s energy transition in the Emsland region.
