Morocco Powers Ahead With 202 MW Solar Expansion As OCP Advances Green Energy Goals

Morocco has taken a major step forward in its renewable energy journey with the launch of three new solar power plants developed by the OCP Group. These facilities, with a combined capacity of 202 megawatts peak, are part of the company’s long-term strategy to transition fully to green energy by 2027 and to reach complete carbon neutrality by 2040. The projects were developed in partnership with the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy and represent one of the most significant industrial solar deployments in the country to date.

The three plants were built in Benguerir with 67 MWp, Khouribga with 105 MWp, and Youssoufia with 30 MWp. Together, they required an investment of around 1.8 billion Moroccan dirhams, or approximately 165 million euros. The initiative was led by OCP Green Energy, a subsidiary responsible for driving renewable energy development across OCP’s industrial and mining operations. Support for the projects also came from international institutions, including the International Finance Corporation and Germany’s KfW Development Bank, reflecting growing global confidence in Morocco’s clean energy strategy.

These solar plants are expected to play a crucial role in reducing emissions across the company’s production chain. They will help supply renewable electricity to OCP’s key operations, which rely heavily on power for phosphate mining and fertilizer production. By generating clean energy at an industrial scale, OCP aims to set a strong example for decarbonization across heavy industries in the region.

Morocco has emerged as a leader in renewable development in Africa. The country has set a national target to produce 52 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, and the latest solar rollout strengthens progress toward that goal. In addition to current installations, Morocco is advancing other major energy initiatives, including a planned 400-MW solar plant in the Draa-Tafilalet region. These investments support the creation of a sustainable energy ecosystem and increase opportunities for manufacturing and technology development in the solar sector.

There is also growing discussion around establishing a domestic solar panel manufacturing industry to supply future projects. Studies have explored opportunities such as a potential 200-MW TOPCon solar cell and module factory, which could help reduce dependence on imports and strengthen Morocco’s industrial capacity in clean technology.

The inauguration of OCP’s solar plants marks a major milestone not only for the company but also for Morocco’s broader renewable energy landscape. By integrating solar energy at scale and committing to long-term sustainability, OCP is reinforcing its position as a global leader in environmentally responsible production and contributing significantly to the country’s green energy ambitions.
