The Organizing Committee of the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 (WHE 2025) announced on the 28th that it will once again operate its Carbon Emission Calculation Program during this year’s exhibition, scheduled from December 4–7 at KINTEX 2. Co-chaired by Nam Hoon Kang, Chairman of the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association, and Jae-Hong Kim, Chairman of the Korea Hydrogen Alliance, the initiative marks the program’s second consecutive year, reinforcing the expo’s commitment to transparent and data-driven environmental management.
Advancing Sustainability Through Data-Based Carbon Management
Launched in 2024, the Carbon Emission Calculation Program systematically measures greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the event. WHE 2025 will continue this effort by collecting and analyzing emission data related to electricity consumption, gas use, waste disposal, and visitor transportation. The program aims to ensure the exhibition’s operational footprint aligns with the hydrogen industry’s core values of decarbonization and sustainability.
The initiative is designed not only to quantify emissions but also to pave the way for long-term sustainability planning within the exhibition sector. By accumulating year-on-year data, WHE intends to develop a more refined emissions profile for large-scale industry events and set clear targets for carbon neutrality.
Visitor Participation Encouraged Through Transport-Based Emission Analysis
A key component of the program involves analyzing visitor transportation patterns. Baseline emissions are calculated assuming the use of internal combustion engine vehicles, and the actual emissions reported by visitors—via an on-site survey—are compared to determine reductions.
Expo visitors can take part in a quick survey by inputting their departure point and mode of transportation. To encourage participation, the committee will offer small gifts to select respondents through a draw. This interactive setup aims to help attendees better understand their personal role in emission reduction and the significance of carbon tracking.
Insights from WHE 2024: 214.36 tCO₂eq Emissions Recorded
During WHE 2024, total exhibition-related carbon emissions were calculated at 214.36 tCO₂eq, including electricity usage, waste disposal, and transportation. Notably, high public transportation adoption contributed to a reduction effect of approximately 39.45 tCO₂eq, representing 18.4% of the total calculated emissions.
This dataset became a foundational reference for developing structured, year-round environmental management strategies for the event—moving beyond the typical one-off post-event evaluation model.
Building a Long-Term Carbon Neutrality Roadmap
WHE 2025’s second-year implementation is particularly significant, as it enables the establishment of a long-term carbon data accumulation system. With comparable two-year datasets, organizers aim to analyze trends, refine carbon reduction strategies, and enhance performance-based sustainability management across future exhibitions.
Following the 2025 event, a comprehensive results and analysis report will be published, offering detailed insights and serving as a resource for broader adoption of sustainable practices across the exhibition industry.
Setting a New Standard for Sustainable Industry Events
By implementing the Carbon Emission Calculation Program for two consecutive years, the World Hydrogen Expo is taking a leading role in transparent environmental impact disclosure and practical, data-led sustainability efforts. The program reflects the hydrogen industry’s mission to achieve carbon neutrality and integrates these values holistically into event management.
As the largest and most influential hydrogen industry event in Korea and the Asia-Pacific region, WHE 2025 continues to elevate global standards for eco-conscious exhibition operations.
Visitor Registration Open
Pre-registration for visitors is available until Wednesday, December 3, through the official website and mobile platforms. Advance registration offers discounted admission to the event.
