Tata Power has commissioned the 400 kV Koteshwar–Rishikesh transmission line, a key infrastructure link that will support the evacuation of 1,000 MW of hydropower from the Tehri–Koteshwar complex in Uttarakhand to northern states and Union Territories. The announcement marks a significant expansion of transmission capacity in India’s northern power corridor.
The project was executed under NRSS XXXVI Transmission Ltd., which is operated by Resurgent Power Ventures Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture promoted by Tata Power, ICICI Bank, and global institutional investors.
The newly commissioned line will facilitate the flow of renewable energy to Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Tata Power said the upgrade would enhance grid reliability and contribute to regional energy security.
Built across steep Himalayan terrain in New Tehri and Dehradun districts, the transmission infrastructure reaches altitudes above 1,816 metres. Construction required specialised logistics and adherence to stringent environmental guidelines, with material movement in remote areas performed manually through head-loading.
Despite these challenges, over 500 skilled workers completed the project’s on-ground execution within a year, following land clearance across 103 hectares. Tata Power said the timely delivery underscores its engineering capabilities and commitment to safe and sustainable project delivery.
The Koteshwar–Rishikesh line is the third element completed under the NRSS XXXVI project. Earlier commissioned components include the 400 kV LILO Sikar–Neemrana Double Circuit line and the 400 kV LILO Babai–Bhiwani Double Circuit line.
With this addition, Tata Power now has 7,083 circuit kilometres of transmission lines operational or under execution across the country, further strengthening its role in expanding India’s electricity transmission network.
Tata Power currently operates a diversified energy portfolio of 15.9 GW, with renewable sources accounting for 44% of generation capacity. The company has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 and serves approximately 13 million customers across India.
