NewPower Energy has announced the acquisition of a fully consented 30 MWp solar project from Lightyears Solar, marking a significant addition to its growing renewable energy portfolio. The upcoming solar farm, situated just outside Cambridge, is slated to begin construction in early 2026.
Infratec, a fellow subsidiary under WEL Networks, has been appointed as the EPC contractor for the project. The facility will feature over 45,000 solar panels equipped with tracking technology to follow the sun throughout the day, optimising energy generation. According to the companies, the project will be developed in close collaboration with the local community and mana whenua, ensuring both regional energy resilience and shared community benefits.
The site design also supports dual land use, allowing livestock grazing to continue alongside the solar infrastructure. The solar farm is expected to be fully commissioned by early 2027.
The Cambridge project strengthens NewPower Energyโs expanding generation portfolio, which currently includes 4.5 MWp in Naumai, two solar farms in the Waikato region, the 33 MWp Taiohi project now being commissioned, and the 12 MWp Rangimฤrie project under construction. Together with the 35 MWh Rotohiko battery energy storage system near Huntly, these assets contribute to advancing Aotearoaโs national target of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030.
