A new floating solar PV park is set to be developed in the Netherlands by a local cooperative, with support from the Friesland Clean Energy Fund and the municipal authorities. The project aims not only to generate renewable energy but also to enable local ownership and community engagement. Complementary facilities around the water area, including a mountain bike trail, will be created, and a fishing pier has already been installed.
Maura van de Meent, Managing Director of GroenLeven, stated: โThis successful transaction reaffirms our commitment to expanding solar in the Netherlands. Deploying floating solar is an important step in increasing the share of renewable energy in the system. This project marks a significant milestone in our ambition to deliver large-scale energy solutions.โ
Dr. Daniel Gaefke, COO of BayWa r.e., highlighted the collaborationโs community impact: โThis partnership demonstrates how we work with a broad spectrum of investors to deliver impactful renewable energy projects. Empowering cooperatives to take ownership is central to building a resilient and inclusive energy system. The deal shows our ability to develop projects across different scales and ownership models while creating meaningful local impact.โ
Floating-PV installations are increasingly important for renewable energy integration. By placing solar panels on inland waters such as sand extraction lakes, hydro dams, or former coal quarries, energy can be produced sustainably without using additional land. The natural cooling effect of water also enhances panel efficiency, supporting reliable energy generation.
The project exemplifies the potential of combining innovative technology, local participation, and sustainable energy generation to advance the Netherlandsโ clean energy goals.
