ACCIONA Energía has begun supplying renewable energy from its Logrosan biomass plant in Cáceres to the grid. The facility, with a capacity of 50 MW, is expected to generate approximately 380 GWh annually, preventing over 187,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. This reduction is equivalent to removing around 60,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road or planting 9,000 trees. The plant will consume an estimated 275,000 metric tonnes of biomass each year, primarily sourced from forestry waste. The collection of this biomass supports active forest management, reducing excess fuel in forests and thereby lowering the risk and intensity of wildfires in the region.

ACCIONA Energía secured the contract for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Logrosan biomass plant through the third auction under Spain’s renewable energy economic regime. This framework guarantees a fixed sale price for the electricity produced by the plant over a 20-year period. Biomass energy offers several advantages as a renewable resource. It is dispatchable, meaning it can operate continuously, respond to peak electricity demand, and contribute to overall grid stability. It also generates significant employment, promoting rural development and enhancing local supply chains.

During the construction of the Logrosan plant, over 400 jobs were created, and the facility will support around 30 direct operational and maintenance positions. Additionally, more than 900 contractors and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the agroforestry and transport sectors will be involved in the supply chain. About 200 of these jobs are directly related to the collection of forestry waste, prunings, and scrubland material, effectively acting as year-round forest management and fire prevention roles.

The economic benefits extend beyond direct employment. Approximately one-third of the income generated by the plant is expected to remain in the local area through services, staff recruitment, and procurement of supplies. In rural regions affected by depopulation and limited industrial activity, biomass generation serves as a significant driver of economic revitalization. ACCIONA Energía has also initiated several programs to support the socio-economic development of the region. These include the revitalization of the Del Campo San Mateo olive oil cooperative, the installation of a photovoltaic self-consumption system at a livestock cooperative, and financial support for biomass suppliers to acquire machinery.

With more than 25 years of experience in the biomass sector, ACCIONA Energía has expertise across the entire value chain, from design and construction to operation, maintenance, and supply management. The company relies on a well-established network of suppliers—some spanning three generations—and employs advanced technologies for monitoring, digital control, predictive diagnostics, boiler optimization, and high-efficiency emissions-reduction systems.

These capabilities maximize energy efficiency, minimize downtime, and ensure compliance with strict environmental standards. ACCIONA Energía has a proven track record in southern Europe, having commissioned the Sangüesa biomass plant (30 MW) in 2002, followed by the Briviesca (16 MW) and Miajadas (15 MW) facilities. The Logrosan plant represents the company’s continued leadership in deploying large-scale, efficient, and environmentally responsible biomass energy solutions.
