Maharashtra is set to take another major step in renewable energy development as Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy & Infrastructure Technology Ltd (MAHAPREIT) has issued a Request for Selection (RfS) for a 100 MW grid-connected floating solar photovoltaic power project. The project will be developed at the Tansa and/or Modak Sagar dams in Maharashtra, using existing water bodies to generate clean electricity.

The floating solar project will be implemented on a Design-Finance-Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (DBFOOT) basis. Under this model, the selected developer will be responsible for designing and building the plant, arranging the financing, and operating it for a long-term period before transferring it as per the agreement. MAHAPREIT will purchase the electricity generated from the project for 25 years, providing a stable revenue stream for the developer while supporting Maharashtraโ€™s renewable energy goals.

Floating solar projects are gaining attention in India because they reduce the need for large land parcels, which is often one of the biggest challenges for ground-mounted solar plants. By using reservoirs and dams, floating solar systems can support clean power generation without disturbing agricultural land or requiring major land acquisition. Such projects also help in utilizing idle water surfaces for productive purposes.

MAHAPREIT has set a ceiling tariff of Rs. 4.18 per unit for this tender. Developers interested in bidding must follow the tender requirements and pay certain fees. The non-refundable cost of the RfS document has been fixed at INR 29,500. In addition, bidders must pay a tender processing fee of INR 40 lakh plus GST. However, MAHAPREIT has stated that 90% of this processing fee may be refunded in cases where bidders are disqualified during technical or financial evaluation, or if they are not allocated any project capacity.

The tender also includes strict financial security conditions. Bidders are required to submit an Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) of INR 5,46,06,617 as part of the bidding process. After winning the bid, the selected developer will have to provide a Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) worth INR 54,60,66,177. These measures are aimed at ensuring that only serious and capable developers participate and that the project is delivered on time.

Apart from these, the successful bidder will have to pay facilitation charges totaling INR 32,76,39,706. These charges will be paid in two installments within one year from the date of signing the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The bidding schedule is already in place, with the document download starting on January 17, 2026. MAHAPREIT has also planned a site visit for interested developers up to January 22, 2026, at 10:00 AM. A pre-bid meeting will be held on January 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM. The online bid submission deadline is February 12, 2026, at 3:00 PM, followed by the hard copy submission deadline on February 13, 2026, at 4:00 PM. The techno-commercial bids will be opened on February 16, 2026, at 2:00 PM.

With this tender, MAHAPREIT is aiming to boost large-scale clean energy adoption in Maharashtra while highlighting the growing role of floating solar technology in Indiaโ€™s power sector.
