Juniper Green Energy Limited has fully commissioned India’s first merchant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 100 MWh at Bikaner in Rajasthan. The project has been developed through its subsidiary, Juniper Green Cosmic Private Limited, and marks the company’s entry into operational merchant energy storage in the country. With this commissioning, Juniper Green Energy has positioned itself among the early movers in India’s growing energy storage market.
The entire 100 MWh capacity has completed trial operations and has received the necessary approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre. Commercial operations for the project began on January 23, 2026. The Bikaner facility is now fully operational and stands as one of the largest battery energy storage systems currently operating in India. The project is expected to generate merchant revenues through multiple avenues, including peak power arbitrage, grid balancing services, and participation in ancillary service markets.
For this project, Juniper Green Energy partnered with global renewable energy company Envision Energy, which supplied and installed the energy storage systems at the Bikaner site. The collaboration brings global technology and expertise into India’s energy storage ecosystem, supporting the reliable operation of large-scale battery assets.
Battery energy storage systems are increasingly seen as a key component of India’s clean energy transition. They play an important role in maintaining grid stability, integrating large volumes of renewable energy, managing peak electricity demand, and improving the efficient use of transmission infrastructure. Recognising this, Juniper Green Energy has outlined plans to deploy battery storage across all its solar projects connected to the interstate transmission system, creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage platform over time.
Commenting on the development, Ankush Malik, CEO of Juniper Green Energy, said that the commissioning of India’s first merchant BESS reinforces the company’s leadership in energy storage innovation while opening up new revenue opportunities and supporting grid reliability. Alongside the Bikaner project, Juniper has already installed an additional 400 MWh of BESS capacity at Fatehgarh in Rajasthan, which is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2026, further strengthening its storage portfolio and long-term growth outlook.
