Waaree Energies Limited has begun construction of a large-scale integrated solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Butibori, Nagpur, marking a significant step toward strengthening India’s domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem.

The groundbreaking ceremony signals a major milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on imported solar components as the renewable energy sector continues to expand rapidly.

The upcoming facility, located in Butibori, will feature 10 GW production capacity each for solar ingots and wafers, making it the largest integrated ingot and wafer manufacturing complex in India. The project is designed to strengthen the upstream segment of the solar photovoltaic value chain, which plays a critical role in the manufacturing of solar cells and modules.

Spread across 300 acres, the facility is being developed with an investment of approximately ₹6,200 crore. The plant will focus on producing high-purity solar ingots and wafers—key raw materials required for solar module manufacturing. By expanding domestic production in these components, the project aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported materials and create a more stable and resilient solar supply chain.

Once operational, the project is expected to generate more than 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, supporting regional economic development, industrial growth, and skill creation in the state of Maharashtra.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by several government leaders and industry stakeholders, including Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways.

Speaking at the event, Hitesh Doshi, Chairman and Managing Director of Waaree Energies, said the project represents an important step toward strengthening India’s upstream solar manufacturing capabilities. He emphasized that building domestic capacity across the solar value chain is essential to support the country’s clean energy transition and reduce import dependence.

Doshi also highlighted Nagpur as a strategic location for the project due to its strong industrial ecosystem and connectivity across the country, which will support large-scale manufacturing and logistics operations.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader policy focus on strengthening domestic manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and supporting the long-term development vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
