With an aim to powering India 24/7 with enhanced utilization of renewable energy, The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched a Round the Clock Power scheme last year. This is believed to be helpful in addressing grid integration issues at the source and provide stakeholders the ability to utilize the long-term benefits emanating from RE. To make it a ground reality, The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) issued its first tender with a capacity of 400MGW for round-the-clock renewable energy supply. However, recently MNRE has passed a resolution with the amendments to the guidelines for tariff-based competitive bidding process for procurement of Round-The-Clock (RTC) power from grid-connected renewable energy (RE) power projects, complemented with power from any other source or storage.

The key amendment made to the guidelines was the formal introduction of “power from any other source or storage” into the guidelines to replace the unidirectional approach of bundling renewable energy with only thermal power.

The latest notification from the MNRE has further clarified that ‘renewable energy (RE) power’ wherever used in the guidelines, shall refer to power from solar power generating systems, wind power generating systems, or a combination thereof, with or without Energy Storage Systems (ESS), commissioned in pursuance of bidding process under these guidelines.
