UPNEDA announces sops for rooftop solar projects

The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) is encouraging people and businesses in the city to install electricity-generating solar panels put

on rooftops of houses and commercial buildings.

In their bid to reduce dependency on fossil fuel-based power generation, the government agency is offering solar panels at a subsidized rate. A 1 kilo-watt plant will cost Rs 80,000. The upside is that consumers won't have to pay for the energy produced by the plant.

A senior official in UPNEDA Bharat Bhushan also said besides free consumption of electricity, consumers can sell surplus electricity generated to discoms at the end of the year. "The distribution company will pay 50 paisa per unit," Bhushan said.
