In Conversation with Mr. Anuj Nigam – Director, Startling Solar Pvt Ltd

Let’s begin with a glimpse of your company’s presence and offerings in India?

Our company is a Solar EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) company headquartered in Mumbai. We also have offices in NCR, Lucknow, Indore & Raipur. Thus effectively we have our presence in five states where we have done majority of our rooftop solar projects though we are capable of executing the solar projects pan India. We offer solar solutions on turnkey basis which includes various activities viz. site surveying, detailed designing, selection of components, installation and then post installation like Net Metering etc. This holistic approach gives a single window access to our clients for installation of solar power plant designed and installed customized to their requirements. We also provide consultancy for setting up solar plants on MW scale.

What have been some of the recent developments at your organization?

We started from scratch in 2013 and I am happy to say that we are having a growth rate of greater than 100% y-o-y basis for the last three years. We are now working towards opening more offices in northern region in order to expand our geographical client base. We are also happy to say that we are designated as Knowledge Partner for Solar for IIA (Indian Industries Association) which is an apex body for MSME sector and prides itself in having more than seven thousand member companies. We recently installed solar plant on their marquee headquarter building in Lucknow. Many of IIA’s members are also among our esteemed clients.
Tell us a bit about the recent technology advancements in your sector?

The solar market is inching more towards the on grid systems those without the use of battery. The introduction of net metering progressively over most of the states; the availability of grid power makes these systems very cost effective. The normal payback is around 4-5 years or even less where the grid rates are on higher side. Even where there is a power cut for one or two hours the solar system can be synchronized with diesel gensets to ensure uninterrupted supply of solar power.

What are your growth plans for the Indian market? What are the milestones you wish to achieve by the end of this fiscal?

We had been recently ranked by one of the leading publications as one of the most promising companies in the Energy & Power Sector. We have a very dedicated team who go at all lengths to ensure that we have a long list of satisfied customers. We have doggedly worked our way to becoming a name to reckon with in rooftop solar space. We are now spreading our wings to other states and hope to enter the utlity sector in near future.

What have been the latest trends in demand for your products & services in India? Where do you see the next demand growth coming from?

The consumers can be distinctly divided into sectors namely C&I (Commercial & Industrial), Institutional, Social, Residential, Telecom & Agriculture. The noteworthy thing is that demand is emanating as well as increasing from all these sectors. We are thankful to the Discoms who are giving very good support in their activities like inspections, installation of net meters at rapid pace. We are also thankful to the state nodal agencies for promptly disbursing the subsidies wherever applicable. We are happy to say that we are catering to customers in all these sectors.

We always request our customers to please pay a very strict attention to the quality of the components and the installation methods used by the EPC companies. Price should be the last factor when considering the option of solar system. The generation is what matters in the end. The life of the system is more than 25 years so an incremental increase in generation from a good quality system every year can increase the profits manifold.
