India likely to add 35 pc more solar power capacity in FY16 than target

India is expected to add 35 per cent more solar generation capacity in the current fiscal than the envisaged target. The actual capacity addition in solar power generation in 2015-16 should be 2,700 MW, compared to the target of 2,000 MW, cumulative capacity addition in solar power has already reached. Another 300 MW is likely to be added over the remaining days of the fiscal.

India has envisaged to adding 1 lakh MW solar capacity by 2022 as per the target revised by the NDA Government. Capacity addition in solar power has picked up after the Government revised the target in 2014. India's solar capacity crossed 5,000 MW mark.

The MNRE has envisaged commissioning 12,000 MW solar generation capacity in 2016-17. Against that, tender has already been issued for projects worth 18,000 MW. India has also envisaged adding 60,000 MW wind power generation capacity in addition to the ambitious solar mission.
