"Compared to the previous results imec reported, we have further optimized the fully screenprinted bifacial n-PERT cell process and adopted a design with twelve busbars. The current cells also have a screenprinted front grid and rear soldering pads that use less silver," says Loic Tous, project leader at imec/EnergyVille. "The open circuit voltage (Voc) is now above 690mV with fill factors up to 83%. These remarkable results are obtained using the same industry-compatible equipment to produce bifacial p-PERC cells, with the addition of a boron diffusion."

A batch of 12 new M2-sized cells (244.3 cm²) measured at ISFH CalTec showed an average conversion efficiency of 23.0 percent, with the best cell topping 23.2 percent, and our own measurements revealed a bifaciality above 80 percent. Moreover, used under standard front illumination conditions in conjunction with an additional 0.15 sun rear illumination, the cells can achieve an effective conversion efficiency of almost 26 percent. In addition, ISFH Caltec measured an average reverse current of -0.4A (at -12V) indicating excellent breakdown characteristics.

The developed n-PERT technology has a number of inherent advantages over p-type PERC cell technology, which is demonstrated in these newest cells: the potential for higher efficiencies because of a lower sensitivity to metal impurities, and the absence of light induced degradation (LID). Therefore, n-type PERT technology could become a cost-effective contender to p-type PERC cells. To enable this, the current cells have a screenprinted front grid and rear soldering pads which together amounts to less than 80mg of silver used per cell. 

Imec and Jolywood are confident that their bifacial n-PERT cells will soon reach efficiencies above 23.5 percent, coupled to a bifaciality above 90 percent.

ENGIE announces that the consortium in which it holds a majority stake has won the competitive bidding process conducted by Petrobras for the sale of a 90% shareholding in Transportadora Associada de Gás S.A. (TAG) with a final and binding offer amounting to USD 8.6bn.

TAG is the largest natural gas transmission network owner in Brazil, a priority country within ENGIE’s recently announced strategic framework, with an asset base providing an attractive and stable regulated profit stream to ENGIE. TAG assets consists of 4,500 kilometers of gas pipelines in Brazil, which represents 47% of the country’s entire gas infrastructure.

The winning offer for the 90% equity stake in TAG was made by a consortium composed of ENGIE S.A, ENGIE Brasil Energia1 and la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ). Petrobras will maintain a 10% equity stake in TAG.

ENGIE’s net total ownership of TAG (directly and indirectly through Engie Brasil Energia) will amount to 49.3%2. As TAG will be jointly controlled, it will not be consolidated into their balance sheets. Within the TAG acquisition financing structure, a debt/equity ratio of 70/30 is targeted at closing. Given this secured financing structure and ENGIE’s net total ownership percentage, ENGIE expects to have a net debt impact of EUR 1.6bn in conjunction with the transaction.

In addition to its ownership, ENGIE will be the industrial partner for TAG, managing the asset after the closing of the transaction and taking 100% of the operations and maintenance after the third year.

This acquisition is fully aligned with ENGIE’s strategy to be the leader of the zero carbon transition. This transition requires sophisticated large-scale energy infrastructure such as the TAG pipeline network. Natural gas will increasingly contribute to the diversification and decarbonization of Brazil’s energy mix, replacing high carbon energy sources while complementing renewable generation. This acquisition is also in line with ENGIE’s objective to rebalance the geographic and regulatory exposures of its networks activities and to benefit from the steadily growing Brazilian gas market. TAG will provide ENGIE with revenues based on long-term contracts and the opportunity to broaden its local customer portfolio and develop new uses for gas transportation networks stemming from new technologies such as biomethane and green hydrogen. Finally, the financing partnership scheme implemented with CDPQ for this acquisition highlights ENGIE’s commitment to efficient capital allocation.

The transaction is conditional upon the approval of the relevant governance bodies of Petrobras and the Brazilian and European Union anti-trust authorities. The closing is expected before the end of the first semester 2019. The Group will detail further financial impacts of TAG acquisition once closing is achieved.

A recently awarded $10,000 contract to the Goldendale Chamber of Commerce by the Port will be used to support astronomy and science tourism awareness of the area's unique facilities.

Goldendale Observatory State Park Heritage Site, Maryhill Museum's Stonehenge replica, and the Hanford Reservation's LIGO and B Reactor installations create a unique tourism experience accessible to science-interested tourists coming to Washington through SeaTac International Airport, as well as their counterparts living in the region.

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla., April 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ --

Duke Energy today celebrated the ceremonial grand opening of its new 1,640-megawatt Citrus Combined Cycle Station located at the 5,100-acre Crystal River Energy Complex in Citrus County, Fla., about 85 miles north of Tampa.

More than 300 community leaders, elected officials and Duke Energy employees attended.

The station started producing energy for 4.5 million Floridians in late 2018.

"Our $1.5 billion investment in the new Citrus Combined Cycle Station is another example of the cleaner, smarter energy future we're creating for our customers," said Lynn Good, Duke Energy chairman, president and CEO. "This highly efficient, state-of-the-art natural gas station is delivering significant economic and environmental benefits to Florida customers and communities."  

Environmental benefits

Combined-cycle natural gas units generate energy more efficiently and have significantly lower emissions than coal-fired units.

By investing in the new Citrus station, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and other emissions are expected to drop by 90 percent in comparison to the operation at the two 1960s-era Crystal River coal-fired units, which formally retired in December 2018. 

The new station is also strategically built on the east side of its 400-acre property to protect an active bald eagle's nest, which currently has two eaglets, and wetlands that are on the west side of the property.

Economic benefits

The Citrus station provided more than $600 million in economic benefits during construction and will provide about $13 million annually during the station's 35-year operational life.

During the height of construction, the project created about 3,000 temporary construction jobs and provided work to more than 100 companies around the world and across the U.S. and Florida. In all, crews poured about 37,000 cubic yards of concrete – equal to about six football fields filled waist deep – and installed about 475 miles of wire and cable.

The new station is expected to generate approximately $4 million in new Citrus County property taxes for 2019, benefiting schools and local governments.

About 50 full-time Duke Energy employees are operating and maintaining the station.

"Economic development in every community needs a solid cornerstone," said Jeff Kinnard, chairman, Citrus County Board of County Commissioners. "In Citrus County, that foundation is Duke Energy. We are pleased to participate in the celebration of this new state-of-the-art facility and congratulate Duke Energy on its success."

Community commitment

Since 1966, Duke Energy employees have donated their time, talent and treasure to give back to the communities and neighborhoods where they live and work.

Since 2012, Duke Energy has contributed more than $1.75 million to Citrus County through Duke Energy Foundation grants and community sponsorships.

In 2018 alone, the company provided about $125,000 in Foundation grants and community sponsorships to Citrus County organizations and an additional $103,000 to United Way of Citrus County through employee pledges and the Foundation match.

Employees also logged 2,927 volunteer hours helping nonprofit organizations advance their mission, such as removing algae from a local spring and sponsoring underprivileged children at Christmas.

Other details

The Crystal River Energy Complex is home to the new Citrus Combined Cycle Station, two operating coal-fired units – which are among the cleanest in the country – two retired coal-fired units and a decommissioning nuclear plant.

The complex also has a mariculture center that raises and then releases fish into the Gulf of Mexico and grows freshwater eelgrass, donating more than 8 million individual plants for various springs and lake restoration projects.  

The Citrus station has two power blocks, four combustion turbine generators and two steam turbine generators, providing the latest technology with a proven performance.

Megawatts from the new station combined with the two operating coal-fired units make the Crystal River Energy Complex one of Duke Energy's largest generators in Florida, capable of producing more than 3,000 megawatts of energy. One megawatt powers about 800 average homes.

The new station receives natural gas through the new 515-mile Sabal Trail pipeline. The $3.2 billion pipeline starts in Alabama, extends through Georgia and ends in Central Florida. Duke Energy is a 7.5 percent owner of the pipeline.

Benin
In Benin, 85 percent of electricity utilized is currently imported from neighboring countries. To strengthen the country's grid and manage electricity losses that result during energy transmission, GE will design and supply the first Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) in Benin for the Société Béninoise d'Energie Electrique (SBEE) and undertake the rehabilitation of substations and telecommunication infrastructure at the National Distribution Control Center in Cotonou.

Part of GE's Digital Energy portfolio, ADMS is engineered with adaptive algorithms and predictive analytics to help utilities operate the grid more efficiently and enable automation. The system will be able to predict issues, identify the faults on the grid and propose a restoration plan.

Cote d'Ivoire
Under this contract, GE will rehabilitate and expand three 225kV substations in Ferke, Man and Taabo. This project will help improve the electricity supply in the northern, western and central part of Côte d'Ivoire.

"With about 90% of the country's population having access to electricity and the growing demand for energy, limited distribution systems cause a total energy loss of approximately 20% annually. There is a need to rehabilitate and strengthen the country's grid infrastructure," said Bile Gerard TANOE Secretary General of CI-ENERGIES. "This project will improve the power capacities of Ferke, Man and Taabo substations to help mitigate total energy losses and provide the reliability needed to limit the total unavailability of these critical substations," he added.
