The Ministry of Home Affairs decided to establish a project for renewable energy-based power supply with Japan in order to ensure a steady and reliable power supply to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Notably, the government signed a grant agreement on March 31 with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to provide a $133 million loan. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration is currently executing the project and it is expected to be completed by February 2024.
The administration will be able to reduce their carbon footprint by replacing diesel-based power generation systems with renewable energy after the project is completed.
The renewable energy-based power supply proposed will supply power supply in South Andaman’s most sensitive region, in particular by using power generated from renewable sources through equipment and facilities like grid interconnection system and storage battery system.
According to government data, the total population in the union territory was 400,647 in 2021. This is dependent on diesel generation on the individual islands. Power generation takes place through 53 power stations in 19 inhabited Islands. Twelve power houses are located in North Andaman and Middle Andaman.
They explained that many parts of South Andaman have been designated as protected areas and that renewable energy is the best choice. The project will also provide clean power for the defense forces that monitor the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
