ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company and a global leader in energy transition and green hydrogen, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, ROSTOCK PORT GmbH, and VNG AG to establish a green ammonia export corridor linking Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu project to Germany’s Port of Rostock.
The agreement was witnessed by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Minister of Energy, and H.E. Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership in advancing cross-border clean energy trade.
Under the MoU, ACWA Power, supported by EnBW, is leading the development of a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, with commercial operations targeted for 2030. EnBW will serve as the offtaker of green ammonia, managing its commercial and logistical delivery to Rostock Port. ROSTOCK PORT will act as the port operator, while VNG is advancing plans to develop an ammonia cracking facility near the port to convert imported green ammonia into green hydrogen for injection into Germany’s national hydrogen core network.
The project aims to support Germany’s decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors while enhancing long-term energy security and establishing a strategic entry point for Saudi green molecules into the European market. A Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study for the Yanbu process plants is currently underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
ACWA Power is also evaluating opportunities for co-development and potential co-investment in ammonia infrastructure in Germany, strengthening the long-term collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Germany in building a resilient green hydrogen value chain.
Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power, said the partnership marks a pivotal step in establishing a reliable green ammonia export corridor from Saudi Arabia to Germany, leveraging the Yanbu hub to scale up green hydrogen supply for Europe and accelerate global decarbonization efforts.
Dr. Georg Stamatelopoulos, CEO of EnBW, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in advancing the energy transition, stating that the collaboration brings together complementary strengths to deliver affordable and innovative solutions to market.
Jens Scharner, Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT, highlighted the project as a major milestone for Rostock’s development as a strategic energy port, enabling long-term green energy imports and further investment in Germany’s hydrogen economy.
