This project is a combination of solar power production and a battery storage system. It also includes community participation. If there are local offtake or utilisation opportunities, green hydrogen production may also be possible. This project will implement a holistic approach for the local energy transition, and help the region along its low-carbon journey.

BayWa r.e. Lhyfe was also selected to assist the Community of Communes in a process of expression of interest to create a photovoltaic park.

BayWa r.e will be responsible for the development of a 40MWp PV park with an annual output of 52 GWh and the implementation of a battery storage facility. Lhyfe will develop a green hydrogen production unit using the solar park. The solar park can produce renewable hydrogen that can be sold to local authorities, schools, and other urban transport providers within a radius of 100 to 150 kilometers. A one-year study will confirm this potential.

A PV power plant will be connected to an energy storage system. The plant will be able to integrate optimally into the grid by capturing excess sunlight and making use of the existing electrical infrastructure. It will also contribute to the security of electricity supply, especially during peak winter periods.

“BayWa r.e. wants this project to be a showcase for innovation in France, highlighting the benefits of combining flexibility tools and renewable energy production.” Mathieu Bordeleau is the Director of Innovation BayWa r.e. France. We are determined to show the technical feasibility of this project as well as its economic relevance in terms of all services provided, the director added.

BayWa r.e. has offered that the local authority should invest in the project during the development phase, and to become a majority shareholder during the construction and operation. The financial benefits resulting from this investment would be added to the economic and fiscal benefits following the implementation of the solar park.

“BayWa r.e. is very proud to have been selected by the Community of Communes of Haute Saintonge to carry out, together with Lhyfe, a resolutely innovative territorial project combining solar energy, hydrogen and storage at the same site. This project will be a blueprint for regions that want to actively take part in the energy transition, especially as an investment opportunity for local authorities”, commented Celine Tran, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. France.

Innovative projects like Haute-Saintonge, which integrate storage technology and hydrogen into renewable power generation, will play an important role in driving the energy transition forward. BayWa r.e. is therefore currently also exploring other development opportunities in this field in Europe and beyond.
