Safi Power Commissions Rooftop Solar System for Kenyan Bottling Company

Nairobi-based green energy supplier Safi Power has commissioned a 400 kWp rooftop solar system at the Coastal Bottlers plant in Mombasa, Kenya. The new installation will help the soft drinks bottler in transitioning one of its PET production lines to a cleaner source of energy.

Coastal Bottlers Ltd, one of the oldest bottlers of Coca-Cola in Kenya, is set now to reduce its carbon footprint. The rooftop solar installation is expected to generate 600 MWh of energy per year. This will enable the company to avoid more than 8,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the project’s lifetime.

The solar PV system will help in reducing Coastal Bottlers’ power costs to over 25% and streamlining its operating costs. The project is the result of a financing agreement between Safi Power and Spark Energy Services, a finance platform managed by Camco Clean Energy that funds on-site renewable energy and energy efficiency equipment for the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector in Africa.

The latest installation is the second of three phases of a broad project. The first phase carried out in August 2020 involved the transition of Coastal Bottlers’ wastewater treatment plant and administrative block to solar energy. This has enabled the bottler to avoid 6,720 tons of annual carbon dioxide emissions.

Seth Adu-Baah, CEO of Coastal Bottlers, said, the second phase of the project adds their PET line, delivering more combined impact. The transition of the whole production line to solar energy brings the company closer to achieving its sustainable energy goals and contributing solutions to climate change.

Adam Fitzwilliam, Camco’s CFA – East Africa and Spark C&I Lead, said, financing a sustainable energy pipeline for businesses and supporting them on the path to net zero is the reason for establishing Spark.  Camco looks forward to continued dialogue with Coastal Bottlers to help them in reducing their energy costs and become a regional leader in sustainability.

David Kinyua, Co-Founder of Safi Power, said, their partnership with Camco’s Spark team is facilitating off-balance sheet funding which has been a challenge through the traditional commercial lending approach. Camco’s international experience, especially in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, has helped Safi to ensure its execution complies with best practices.
