EGAT – MPD Consortium, namely Mitr Phol Energy Services Co., Ltd.; PEA ENCOM International Co., Ltd.; and Dongfang Electric International Corporation, signed a construction contract for the Hydro-floating Solar Hybrid Project at Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen Province to ensure renewable energy stability for sustainability, driving the country to achieve Carbon Neutrality.
Mr Wang Liping, Minister Counselor of the Economical and Commercial Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand; Mr Boonyanit Wongrukmit, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT); and Mr Buntoeng Vongkusolkit, Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Mitr Phol Group, presided over the construction contract signing ceremony for the Hydro-floating Solar Hybrid Project at Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen Province between EGAT and Mitr Phol Group and Associates (MPD Consortium). The contract was signed between Mr Thidade Eiamsai, EGAT Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy; Mr Krisda Monthienvichienchai, Vice Chairman of the Executives Committee of Mitr Phol Group; Mr Verajet Vongkusolkit, Chief Executive Officer – Thai Sugar, Energy and New Business of Mitr Phol Group, as representative of Mitr Phol Energy Services Co., Ltd.; Mr Li Jianhua, Chairman of the Board of Dongfang Electric International Corporation (DEC); and Mr Payomsarit Sripattananon, Acting Executive Vice President of PEA ENCOM International Co., Ltd. (PEA ENCOM), on May 10, 2023, at JW Marriott Hotel, Bangkok.
Mr Wang Liping, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, revealed that the relationship between China and Thailand is a friendly economic and trade cooperation. China is Thailand’s largest trading partner and Chinese companies with expertise have helped develop the industry in Thailand, such as clean energy, modern agriculture, and digital economy. As for the energy industry, EGAT aims to develop clean energy in line with the government policy to strive toward Carbon Neutrality. DEC, as a leading energy organization in China, and its allies in Thailand believe that the success of this project will lead to sustainable development, academic cooperation, and mutual benefit for China and Thailand.
Mr Boonyanit Wongrukmit, EGAT Governor, said that the project at Ubol Ratana Dam is a part of EGAT’s clean energy development project. EGAT plans to develop an additional 15 hydro-floating solar hybrid projects nationwide to support renewable energy demands sustainably according to the national policy. EGAT also operates the organization using the “Triple S” strategy, namely Sources Transformation: increasing the share of renewable energy in the generation mix and using new technologies to support renewable energy, Sink Co-creation: increasing carbon adsorption methods, and Support Measures Mechanism: promote greenhouse gas reduction to the public and promote EV use.
The 24-MW project at Ubol Ratana Dam generates electricity from clean energy by using a hybrid system that combines solar power and hydropower along with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to help stabilize electricity generation from renewable energy. It is another step forward for EGAT as a leader among clean energy generators and a step forward for the country toward the goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2050.
Mr Buntoeng Vongkusolkit, Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Mitr Phol Group added that Mitr Phol Group aims to operate its business while building sustainability for the society and environment. Mitr Phol Group has been developing eco-friendly renewable energy for over 20 years and expanded from the agriculture sector to develop new types of energy, such as solar power, to support clean energy generation and help Thailand achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2065. This is a cooperation between the public and private sectors and between countries to drive renewable energy development and build sustainability for the economy, society, and environment.
Mr Li Jianhua, Chairman of the Board of DEC, said that as a large private entity that pioneered the energy industry with sustainability and eco-friendliness, DEC has been operating renewable energy projects around the world, such as solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems. This cooperation will be a model for China to help support energy development and achieve carbon neutrality for Thailand and the world.
Mr Payomsarit Sripattananon, Acting Executive Vice President of PEA ENCOM, said that the project at Ubol Ratana Dam will help raise the standard of Thailand’s clean energy stability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a cause of global warming, and is in line with PEA ENCOM’s objective and business plan. PEA ENCOM has joined with business allies and leading organizations on energy engineering and it believes this collaboration will be successful and help EGAT achieve its goal which will benefit the country and Thai people.
