The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) and Bahrain Steel have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Bahrain’s most extensive rooftop solar energy venture, boasting a 100-megawatt capacity. Bahrain Steel, a prominent global supplier of high-grade iron-ore pellets, is taking a significant step towards diversifying energy sources in Bahrain.
Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of EWA, lauded this initiative for its role in achieving energy diversification goals and addressing climate change challenges.
The MoU aligns with Bahrain’s Energy Transition Plan, contributing to the government’s aim of having 5% of the Kingdom’s electricity from renewable sources by 2025, increasing to 20% by 2035. The solar project by Bahrain Steel will utilize EWA’s net metering policy, enabling consumers to generate renewable energy and feed excess power into the national grid through seven connection points in EWA’s distribution network.
Smart meters will be installed for accurate measurement of electricity production and consumption. The solar panels, set to reach a total capacity of 100 megawatts, will be installed within Bahrain Steel’s boundaries in three stages over the next three years.
The project anticipates an annual production of approximately 167,000 megawatt-hours of solar energy, contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and aligning with Bahrain’s goal of achieving net zero by 2060.
Meshary Al Judaimi, Chairman of Bahrain Steel, emphasized the transformative impact of such initiatives, aiming to create a greener and more sustainable future. He expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Bahrain’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions through various sustainable initiatives, aspiring to set an example locally, regionally, and internationally.
