In an effort to expedite Malaysia’s energy transition and achieve a 70% Renewable Energy (RE) capacity mix by 2050, Malakoff Corporation Berhad, through its subsidiary, Malakoff Radiance Sdn Bhd, has inked a significant solar agreement with the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).
The collaboration aims to develop, operate, and maintain carport and rooftop solar systems across railway stations, depots, and a park-and-ride terminal in Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan. With an expected electricity savings of RM 9.7 million for RAC and KTMB, this project, totaling 1.42 MWp capacity, is forecasted to play a pivotal role in reducing an annual 19,376 tCO2e equivalent to preserving 484,400 matured trees.
Aligned with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), specifically targeting solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for rail operations, the signing ceremony at Palm Garden Hotel in Putrajaya saw the involvement of Malakoff’s Managing Director & Group Chief Executive Officer, Encik Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib, alongside key officials from RAC and KTMB. The event was witnessed by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Haji Hasbi Haji Habibollah and Malakoff’s Executive Vice Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohd Noh, among others.
Encik Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasizing Malakoff’s commitment to diversifying its RE portfolio and integrating green energy sources into the energy generation mix for a cleaner, sustainable environment. He highlighted their ambitious target of achieving 1,400 MW of RE capacity by 2031.
RAC’s CEO, YBhg. Datoโ Azhar Ahmad, affirmed their support for government green initiatives and highlighted plans for the second and third phases of the RE initiative. These phases aim to implement RE projects at multiple locations in Peninsular Malaysia, promoting the use of RE within the rail transportation industry.
KTMB’s CEO, YBhg. Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin, emphasized KTMB’s dedication to environmentally friendly practices and the ongoing efforts to advance RE initiatives in collaboration with RAC. The initiative underscores KTMB’s commitment to support Malaysia’s sustainability goals.
Through Malakoff Green Solutions, the corporation has established a total of 151 MW of RE generating capacity, embracing various initiatives such as Large Scale Solar (LSS) and Rooftop Solar (RTS) projects, small hydropower generation, and carbon-free mobility infrastructure.
This Solar Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA) reflects Malakoff’s dedication to UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 7 โ Affordable and Clean Energy, contributing to ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all.
