In a move to fulfill its sustainability commitments, SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the largest steel company in the Philippines, has joined forces with French energy firm TotalEnergies to incorporate renewable energy sources into its Meycauayan, Bulacan facility.
Under the agreement, signed on January 9, TotalEnergies will assist in implementing a 1.9-megawatt solar rooftop project at the facility. Once operational, the solar plant is expected to offset 2.3 million kilograms of carbon dioxide annually.
SteelAsia President Andre Y. Sy noted that this initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize operations, introducing environmentally friendly measures in its existing plants and future facilities across the country.
The company employs green steel manufacturing technologies in its Davao and Cebu plants, with 80 percent of their energy needs met by geothermal energy.
Additionally, SteelAsia utilizes automated furnaces to decrease emissions and achieve fuel cost savings of up to 30 percent.
Currently, SteelAsia is in the process of constructing the first sections mill in Lemery, Batangas, which will focus on producing H-beams for infrastructure and large angles for transmission and cell towers, with all products being 100 percent imported.
