Abu Dhabi Expands Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy to Residential Sector

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has announced the launch of the second phase of its Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy, now extending its scope to include the residential sector for the first time. The move allows villa owners and residential building occupants to generate, store, and efficiently integrate electricity from rooftop solar systems with the grid.

This expansion follows the success of the policy’s first phase, introduced during the World Government Summit in February, which primarily targeted farms, rest houses, and ranches. The initial phase enabled these sectors to adopt solar energy solutions for self-generation and storage, improving energy efficiency and reducing reliance on the grid.

Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Obaidli, Director-General of Regulatory Affairs at DoE, said, “The second phase of the Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy represents a significant step in advancing the policy’s implementation, integrating the residential sector to enhance energy consumption efficiency and support the integration of the power system. We are strengthening partnerships in the transition towards clean energy, contributing to a more balanced and sustainable energy mix by empowering a broader segment of society.”

The residential-focused phase simplifies regulatory processes, streamlines installation and grid connection procedures, and standardises technical requirements to ensure safety and operational efficiency. It also promotes energy storage solutions, enabling households to meet a significant portion of their daily energy needs during daylight hours and reduce peak load pressures on the grid.

Additionally, the policy complements DoE’s framework on the procurement of efficient consumption appliances. It covers key systems that impact energy use, including air conditioning, water heating, lighting, pumps, motors, irrigation systems, and other electrical appliances. The approach emphasises smart control, best operational practices, and regular maintenance to improve energy and water efficiency, reduce peak loads, and enhance overall economic and environmental performance.

The second phase aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030, reflecting DoE’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of advanced energy solutions, improving system efficiency, and encouraging sustainable practices among consumers.
