Israel And Italy Enhance Energy Collaboration: Focus On Renewables And Regional Stability

In a significant diplomatic move, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Eli Cohen engaged in a conversation with Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. The two ministers unveiled plans to enhance cooperation between their states in the vital realms of energy and climate.

A key highlight of their discussion was the exploration of options for exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Italy. Both nations are set to delve into the potential benefits and feasibility of this strategic collaboration. Additionally, the ministers pledged to broaden collaborations in advancing renewable energies, underscoring the shared commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.

Minister Cohen expressed gratitude to Italy for its unwavering support of Israel, especially during recent challenging times. He emphasized the crucial role of Italy as a central ally in the region. The forthcoming energy agreement between the two countries, scheduled to be signed later this year, is expected to fortify Israel’s energy stability and independence, fostering increased connectivity with Europe.

Italy’s Minister Pichetto Fratin, in office since October 2022, reciprocated the appreciation and highlighted the existing projects in the energy sector that bind the two nations. Notably, the East-Med natural gas pipeline, designed to connect Israel to Europe, has been a joint initiative, showcasing the strong bilateral ties. The impending cooperation agreement in the energy sector, currently in advanced formulation stages, holds strategic significance for both countries.

Minister Cohen also shared his satisfaction at witnessing Italian companies expressing interest in exploring natural gas and oil off the Israeli coast, fostering economic collaboration between the nations.

A crucial facet of their conversation centered around the development of renewable energy facilities at sea, particularly focusing on wind turbines. Minister Cohen acknowledged Italy’s valuable experience in this domain and stressed the need for joint technological development tailored to the physical conditions of the Mediterranean, which are similar in both countries.

Furthermore, the ministers recognized Italy’s active role as one of the founding members of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), alongside Israel. The forum, established in 2019 and headquartered in Cairo, aims to foster cooperation among the natural gas markets of its members, promoting an advanced, sustainable regional natural gas sector.
