Huawei Unveils Revolutionary Intelligent Distribution Solution at MWC 2024 for Global Electric Power Sector

At the 2024 Mobile World Congress, Huawei introduced its groundbreaking Intelligent Distribution Solution (IDS) amid discussions among electric power sector stakeholders and leaders from international bodies on the latest in innovation and best practices. The event, under the theme “Leading Infrastructure to Accelerate Electric Power Intelligence,” saw Huawei’s Vice President and CEO of Electric Power Digitalization BU, David Sun, unveiling the IDS during his keynote address.

Developed in partnership with various ecosystem allies, the IDS aims to tackle prevalent challenges in the electric power industry, such as high line losses, unreliable service, and the increasing burden of managing new energy loads. Huawei’s solution marks a shift towards comprehensive digital transformation in the electric power sector by supporting a transition from isolated digital initiatives to a holistic, open, and evolving digital infrastructure. This approach is underpinned by a sophisticated cloud-pipe-edge-device architecture. Huawei advocates for the deployment of an on-premises private cloud to anchor the digital framework on the cloud end. The system incorporates both wired and wireless backhaul network solutions, and introduces an innovative edge computing unit (ECU) that consolidates communication, sensory, and computational functionalities.

A notable feature of the IDS is its utilization of next-generation high-speed power line carrier communication (HPLC) technology for the low-voltage communication segment. This technology facilitates rapid data collection, supports extensive interactive connections, and achieves a data acquisition success rate of 99%.

The deployment of IDS in China has showcased its efficacy in monitoring distribution networks, real-time tracking of 10kV line conditions, and the intelligent oversight of low-voltage distributed new energy sources. By leveraging HPLC among other technologies, the solution advances the digitalization of services and enhances transparency across power transformer districts. Preliminary implementations of the IDS in countries outside China have also yielded positive results.

The summit also featured insights from industry partners such as Sigit Witjaksono from PT. PLN Icon Plus, who discussed the company’s collaborative efforts with Huawei in leveraging a single fiber for multiple services and digital distribution. Mahmoud BinAhmed of Integrated Dawiyat highlighted strategies for electric companies to monetize their assets. Additionally, Mam Singui Sarr of Senelec introduced the Senelec Smart Grid ONE Network concept, focusing on addressing the challenges and key performance indicators in power transmission, transformation, and distribution.

Looking ahead, Huawei is committed to further developing and sharing digital transformation strategies with its global partners and customers. The aim is to bolster the digital infrastructure of electric power companies worldwide, accelerate their journey towards intelligent operations, and position the IDS as a competitive solution on the global market.
