In a significant move towards sustainability, ACEN RES, the retail electricity supply unit of the Ayala group, has announced a strategic collaboration with Philippine telecommunications leader PLDT Inc. (PLDT). The partnership entails powering 33 PLDT facilities nationwide with 100% renewable energy, marking a substantial step in PLDT’s journey towards decarbonization.
This initiative underscores PLDT’s commitment to mitigating climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to clean energy sources. By aligning with global efforts and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, both companies aim to contribute to a greener future.
Melissa Vergel de Dios, PLDT’s chief sustainability officer, emphasized the importance of this transition, stating, “Our pivot to renewable energy transcends efficiency metrics or target achievements. As we all increasingly feel the worsening impacts of climate change, we need to accelerate action and turn these challenges into profound opportunities to work together towards a better future for our planet, our children, and their children.”
Tony Valdez, ACEN’s senior vice president, expressed pride in the partnership, applauding PLDT for its proactive stance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He noted that PLDT’s initiative serves as inspiration for others to embrace sustainable practices, from supply chain partners to its expansive network.
Among the facilities transitioning to renewable energy, the PLDT-Smart Integrated Operations Center (IOC) in Makati City stands out. This two-storey, state-of-the-art facility houses the group’s network teams and is equipped with top-tier network monitoring and multimedia conferencing facilities. The IOC is expected to enhance PLDT and Smart’s capability to deliver world-class services
