In a significant step towards advancing decarbonization efforts, a delegation from Japan, led by Mr. Maeda Tadashi, Special Advisor to the Cabinet, engaged in a productive dialogue with the Philippine Secretary of Energy Raphael P.M. Lotilla. The meeting, attended by officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), and Japanese private sector executives, laid the groundwork for collaborative initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering sustainable energy practices.
Acknowledging the significance of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) framework, both countries highlighted the importance of the Japan-Philippines High-Level Coordination Dialogue as a platform for discussing challenges and solutions related to decarbonization. The dialogue, facilitated by the Department of Energy of the Philippines, aims to develop specific projects and provide assistance to accelerate efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality.
The Philippines becomes the third partner country, following Vietnam and Indonesia, to establish a framework for local discussions between Japanese public and private sectors and local governments under the AZEC framework. This milestone underscores the commitment of both nations to collaborative efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.
Key areas of focus for the joint initiatives include the utilization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transitional fuel, the development of renewable energy sources, the establishment of resilient energy infrastructure, and the adoption of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Projects under the AZEC Japan-Philippines Project Development Platform will be developed in collaboration with Philippine private companies, including the Aboitiz Power Corporation, Metro Pacific Investment Corporation, and San Miguel Corporation. These projects will be based on Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed between JBIC and Philippine private entities, reflecting a commitment to fostering partnerships for sustainable growth.
Looking ahead, the Philippines and Japan pledge to work closely to contribute to decarbonization efforts in Asia through policy harmonization and support. Together with other AZEC partner countries, they aim to drive meaningful progress towards a greener and more sustainable future.
