The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on improving the resilience of global energy systems. This partnership comes at a time when extreme weather events and natural hazards are increasingly disrupting energy infrastructure worldwide. The MoU was signed on 3 December 2025 in New Delhi by IEA Deputy Executive Director Mary Burce Warlick and CDRI Director General Amit Prothi. The agreement focuses on advancing analytical research that will support the planning and investment of resilient energy systems.
It also aims to promote technical exchanges between the two organisations to help policymakers develop strategies for managing climate and disaster risks affecting energy infrastructure. CDRI is a global partnership that includes national governments, UN agencies, development banks, private-sector organisations, and research institutions. Its mission is to promote infrastructure that can withstand climate and disaster risks through sustainable development practices. This aligns closely with the IEA’s growing emphasis on ensuring that energy systems remain secure and stable despite rising climate-related threats.
Recently, in a G20 address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of development in supporting resilience—a core focus of CDRI’s work. Similarly, the IEA hosted a high-level roundtable in Paris on strengthening energy infrastructure resilience, bringing together senior policymakers and industry leaders, including representatives from CDRI, to stress the need for stronger resilience measures.
Commenting on the partnership, Mary Burce Warlick said that rising risks to energy systems mean that resilience is now essential for maintaining energy security, protecting economies, and ensuring national stability. She noted that working closely with CDRI will help countries design stronger and more adaptive energy systems.
Amit Prothi added that the collaboration will bring together the strengths of both organisations to support the creation of sustainable and secure energy systems that can endure climate change and disasters. He emphasized that the partnership aims to ensure that communities continue to have reliable and resilient access to energy even under challenging conditions.
The MoU represents a significant step in enhancing international cooperation on tools, research, and solutions that help countries manage escalating climate and disaster risks. Through this collaboration, the IEA and CDRI aim to support global efforts to build energy infrastructures that are better prepared for current and future challenges.
