FreePower Group, a prominent Chilean energy company, has revealed plans for the Leones Solar photovoltaic project, set to deliver 100 MW of power. Situated in the commune of Papudo within Chile’s Valparaíso region, this innovative endeavor aims to revolutionize energy supply dynamics by integrating an energy storage system.
According to a recent statement by FreePower Group, the project’s design enables the provision of power to a designated customer at a fixed rate, effectively mitigating the escalating systemic transmission charges. By leveraging a combination of solar generation, storage capabilities, and procurement from other renewable sources on the grid, FreePower Group anticipates exceeding 60% of the supplied energy through a Behind the Meter (DoM) arrangement.
The proposed energy storage solution will rely on a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), capable of delivering up to 250 MWh of energy daily. This strategic deployment is poised to ensure reliability, competitiveness, and a consistent energy flow tailored to meet the demands of a free customer requiring power loads ranging between 30 and 50 MW.
With the Leones Solar project having secured definitive connection authorization, it is currently undergoing environmental impact evaluation. FreePower Group anticipates obtaining approval for the project by early 2025, marking a significant milestone in advancing sustainable energy initiatives in the region.
