H2 Green Mining, a joint venture between Susterra, a subsidiary of engineering firm Pares&Alvarez, and Star Energy Partners, a specialized consulting firm in energy and sustainable growth, is at the forefront of driving sustainable mining practices across Chile. Their collaboration with Ohmium marks a pivotal step towards leveraging renewable energy sources for green hydrogen production.

The centerpiece of this collaboration is the development of a 20 MW green hydrogen pilot project, with potential scalability up to 200 MW. Situated in Northern Chile, specifically in the town of Calama within the Atacama Desert, this region boasts abundant renewable energy resources from solar and wind power, making it an ideal location for such initiatives.

Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzers will play a crucial role in this endeavor, facilitating the generation of hydrogen for various processes within copper mines, including the copper smelting process and other thermal operations. Additionally, there are plans to utilize hydrogen from these electrolyzers to fuel trucks transporting minerals to the nearby port in Mejillones.

Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “This pioneering project will pair Chileโ€™s excellent renewable energy potential with the power of green hydrogen to help decarbonize Chileโ€™s mining industry.”

Julio Bertrand, founding partner in Star Energy Partners and former CEO of CAP, Gasco, and ENAP, emphasized the scalability and cost-effectiveness of Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzers, underscoring their suitability as a green hydrogen partner for H2 Green Mining. He added, “H2 Green Mining has an exciting roadmap for the future, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Ohmium to leverage the power of fossil-free energy and help decarbonize Chileโ€™s copper mining industry.”
