In a significant development for Oman’s green energy ambitions, a consortium comprising EDF Group, J-POWER, and Yamna has been granted a land block by Hydrogen Oman SPC (Hydrom) to develop a large-scale green ammonia project. Covering an area of 341km2 in the Governorate of Dhofar, the project aims to have a capacity of producing 1 million tonnes of green ammonia per year.
Leveraging Oman’s abundant renewable energy resources, the consortium plans to install approximately 4.5 GW of wind and solar capacity, along with battery storage and a state-of-the-art 2.5 GW electrolyser. The hydrogen produced will be utilized in an ammonia plant to be constructed in the Salalah Free Zone.
The signing of the Project Development Agreement and Sub-Usufruct Agreement grants the consortium exclusive rights to develop, build, own, operate, and maintain the project for a period of 47 years.
Commenting on the development, HE Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of Hydrom, highlighted Oman’s strategic location and favorable conditions for green hydrogen production. Beatrice Buffon, EDF Renewables Chairwoman, expressed pride in the consortium’s achievement, emphasizing EDF Group’s commitment to decarbonization solutions.
The project aligns with J-POWER’s “Blue Mission 2050” strategy to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality and Yamna’s goal to contribute to Oman’s energy transition and global net-zero emissions goals.
With green hydrogen and its derivatives being crucial for Oman’s energy transition strategy, the consortium’s project aims to support the government’s goal of raising renewable energy-based hydrogen production to at least 1 Mtpa by 2030.
The consortium will now proceed with detailed studies to advance the development of the project, marking a significant step forward in Oman’s journey towards sustainable energy solutions.
