Phelan Green Energy to Invest $2.5 Billion in Peru’s First Green Hydrogen Plant, Spearheading Renewable Energy Initiatives

The governor of Peru’s Arequipa region, Rohel Sánchez Sánchez, has announced plans for the construction of the country’s inaugural green hydrogen plant. Phelan Green Energy, a South African company, will spearhead the project with an investment totaling approximately $2.5 billion. This development marks a significant step towards renewable energy adoption in Peru.

The forthcoming green hydrogen facility, slated to occupy a sprawling 4,000-hectare site, aims to revolutionize Peru’s energy landscape. According to official statements, the plant will cater to both domestic demand and international markets, particularly along the Pacific coast. Products stemming from the hydrogen production include ammonia and low-density ammonium nitrate (ANFO Grade), tailored to meet the needs of various sectors, notably the mining industry.

Fredy Hinojosa Angulo, a spokesperson for the Peruvian presidency, underscored the project’s magnitude during a recent press conference in Lima. He highlighted the commencement of construction as a pivotal moment for Arequipa residents, heralding a new era of sustainable energy initiatives within the region.

While specific project details remain scant, Jean-Louis Gelot, the general director of Phelan in Peru, provided insight into the venture’s scope. Gelot mentioned ongoing discussions with regional authorities regarding land utilization, with hopes to finalize agreements in the coming months. The project’s official launch is slated for July of next year, contingent upon the completion and assessment of an environmental impact study, which could span up to 21 months.

Gelot further elaborated on the project’s three-phase approach, disclosing plans to leverage 1.8 GW of solar energy to yield an annual output of 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. Subsequently, this hydrogen will undergo conversion into 440,000 tonnes of ammonia, earmarked for export via the port of Matarani. The electrolysis process will be sustained by desalinated seawater, reinforcing the plant’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
