Barcelona Municipal Services (BSM) has announced a significant expansion of its solar energy capabilities with the installation of 9,700 square meters of solar panels. This initiative will increase the city’s electricity generation capacity nearly eightfold, adding almost 2 MW of photovoltaic power. The energy produced by these new installations is expected to cover approximately 15% of the annual electricity consumption of BSM’s equipment and facilities. The remaining electricity needs will continue to be met by 100% renewable sources, as is currently the practice.

The project has an estimated total budget of four million euros. Site selection for the solar panels considered the orientation, building characteristics, and hours of solar exposure. The largest installation will be at the Olympic Port, specifically on the roof of the Balcó Gastronòmic, which is nearing the end of construction. This site will feature around 3,560 square meters of photovoltaic modules, capable of generating approximately 825,000 kWh annually. According to the city council, this will be the largest shared self-consumption facility in Barcelona.

The energy from the Olympic Port installation will power the port and nearby BSM spaces, including two electric boat chargers set to begin operation at the end of summer. The arrangement of the panels in pergolas will also provide shade for the Balcó Gastronòmic.

Additionally, the Olympic Ring will feature 2,877 square meters of solar panels, generating about 791,060 kWh annually. The largest system within the Olympic Ring, spanning 2,316 square meters, is currently being installed at the Sant Jordi Palace and will be operational this year. Another system, over 500 square meters, will be located at the Olympic Stadium.

Another significant installation will be at Tibidabo, covering approximately 1,600 square meters on a canopy over one of the park’s parking lots. Scheduled for completion in 2025, this installation will generate around 360,000 kWh annually, partially powering the park.

Further photovoltaic projects are under study to enhance the solar generation capabilities at the Barcelona Zoo and Barcelona Cemeteries. Solar panels will also be installed for the first time at the Barcelona Nord bus station, and the Parc del Fòrum will maintain a photovoltaic system covering 101 square meters.
