83 MW Tepuy Photovoltaic Plant Commences Operations in Colombia’s Caldas Department

The 83 MW Tepuy photovoltaic plant, situated in the municipality of La Dorada in the Caldas department, has officially begun commercial operations. Developed by Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM), this project is now contributing to Colombia’s National Interconnected System (SIN) using 199,534 bifacial solar panels, each ranging between 540 and 550 W of power. These panels are mounted on approximately 29,000 metal structures equipped with solar trackers.

EPM, the largest public service provider in Colombia and owned by the municipality of Medellín, initiated the Tepuy project in July 2022. The plant spans an area of 220 hectares, reflecting a significant expansion in the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.

According to the Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME), Colombia has seen the addition of 611.44 MW of capacity from Non-Conventional Sources of Renewable Energy (FNCER) since January 2023. The Tepuy photovoltaic plant marks a substantial contribution to this growing capacity, reinforcing Colombia’s commitment to sustainable energy development.
