In a significant move towards bolstering its commitment to sustainable practices, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has inaugurated a pilot Biogas plant at its Manesar facility. This initiative, part of MSIL’s broader efforts under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energyโs โWaste to Energyโ program, aims to harness untapped resources like in-house food waste and Napier grass for renewable energy production.
The pilot plant, slated to commence operations in the fiscal year 2024-25, is designed to produce 0.2 tons of biogas daily, with an anticipated output of approximately 1 lac standard cubic meters of biogas for the year. This initiative is expected to offset around 190 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The biogas produced will be utilized to power the manufacturing processes at the Manesar facility, marking a significant step towards energy efficiency and sustainability in automotive manufacturing.
Speaking on the companyโs green energy initiatives, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, highlighted the strategic importance of renewable energy in the companyโs future growth. “As we expand our production capacity, we are committed to increasing the share of sustainable and renewable energy sources across our operations,” said Mr. Takeuchi. He emphasized that the biogas plant at Manesar aligns with Suzukiโs Environment Vision 2050 and supports the Government of Indiaโs renewable energy focus.
In addition to the biogas plant, Maruti Suzuki has also accelerated its solar energy initiatives. The company has expanded its solar capacity to 43.2 MWp at the Manesar facility and is set to add 15 MWp and 20 MWp to the Manesar and Kharkhoda plants, respectively, by fiscal year 2025-26. These efforts underscore MSIL’s commitment to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #7 on affordable and clean energy.
The implementation of the biogas plant at Manesar marks a pivotal moment in Maruti Suzukiโs journey towards sustainable manufacturing, setting a benchmark for the automotive industryโs environmental stewardship.
