Macawber Beekay Private Limited (MBL) has secured three new Green Coal projects in Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), and Hubbali (Karnataka), following the success of its Varanasi Harit Koyla Pariyojna (Green Coal project). These projects, aimed at converting municipal solid waste (MSW) into eco-friendly Green Coal, represent a significant investment in India’s renewable energy sector.
The largest of these projects, with a capacity of 900 tonnes per day (TPD), will be located in Noida, while Bhopal and Hubbali will host plants with capacities of 500 TPD and 400 TPD, respectively. Together with the Varanasi project, these initiatives will enable Macawber Beekay to handle a combined 2,400 tonnes of MSW per day by August 2025, contributing over 800 tonnes of Green Coal daily to NTPC Ltd, Indiaโs leading power generation entity.
NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd, a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, originally awarded Macawber Beekay the Varanasi project on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis. This pioneering venture, generating 200 tonnes of Green Coal daily from 600 TPD of MSW, was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Varanasi, showcasing India’s commitment to environmental sustainability under the Swachh Bharat Mission and the “Make in India” initiative.
Mr. Gautam Gupta, Joint Managing Director of Macawber Beekay, emphasized the company’s technological advancements and its dedication to enhancing efficiency across all projects. He highlighted ongoing innovations derived from the Varanasi experience, which optimize waste conversion processes and minimize environmental impact.
Green Coal, produced through torrefaction of MSW in oxygen-deficient environments, offers a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Macawber Beekayโs proprietary technology utilizes biomass pellets to initiate combustion, while volatile gases produced during the process support self-sustained operations, reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency.
With a robust approach to waste management and energy production, Macawber Beekay aims to revolutionize India’s energy landscape by integrating Green Coal into thermal power plants, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating environmental pollution caused by MSW accumulation.
The companyโs innovative solutions not only address waste management challenges but also offer economic benefits by cutting traditional coal-related costs and improving public health outcomes associated with mining and waste accumulation.
Mr. Brijesh Kumar Singh, Senior General Manager-Projects at MBL, emphasized the environmental and economic benefits of these projects, highlighting their potential to alleviate pollution and groundwater contamination issues associated with landfill sites across India.
The integration of Green Coal into Indiaโs energy infrastructure marks a pivotal step towards achieving sustainability goals and supporting governmental mandates for renewable energy adoption. As India’s power sector continues to evolve, initiatives like Macawber Beekayโs Green Coal projects play a crucial role in shaping a cleaner and greener future for the country.
