Colombia Surpasses 1 GW of Installed Solar Capacity with Major Contributions from Enel Colombia’s New Plants

The Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME) has announced that Colombia’s electricity system now surpasses 1 GW of installed solar capacity, reaching 1,193 MW. This milestone was achieved following the recent commissioning of Enel Colombia’s Fundación and La Loma plants, which collectively contribute 240 MW.

According to UPME, out of the total installed solar capacity, 952 MW have been added since January 1, 2023. The agency also highlighted that an additional 637.08 MW of solar and wind projects are nearing commercial operation, which will increase the country’s installed renewable capacity to 1,830 MW.

Colombia has set an ambitious target of achieving 6 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2026.

The newly operational La Loma plant, with a capacity of 150 MW, is expected to enhance power import control from the Caribbean and Caribbean 2 areas and improve voltage regulation at the La Loma 110 kilovolt node. Meanwhile, the Fundación plant, with a capacity of 90 MW, will aid in managing power imports from the Caribbean, Caribbean 2, and the GCM subarea, in addition to improving voltage control at the Fundación 110 kilovolt node.
