The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Global Climate Finance Centre (GCFC) have unveiled a strategic partnership aimed at scaling up climate finance and advancing renewable energy projects worldwide. This collaboration brings together two influential entities committed to accelerating the global transition to a low-carbon economy.

The GCFC, an independent organization dedicated to catalyzing climate investments, works to create an environment conducive to funding low-carbon, sustainable, and resilient projects. Its approach combines cutting-edge research, market innovations, and capacity-building programs to enhance climate investments, particularly in emerging and developing markets.

Under this new partnership, IRENA and GCFC will leverage their combined expertise across three main workstreams:

  1. Research and Innovation: The partnership will focus on conducting in-depth market research and analysis to develop innovative solutions for key climate finance issues. Areas of focus will include de-risking mechanisms, green industrialization, carbon markets, and policy innovations.
  2. Capacity-Building and Technical Assistance: The two organizations will work together to strengthen local capabilities by building frameworks for renewable energy policies, regulations, and financial skills necessary for developing project pipelines.
  3. Practical Coalitions and Project Pipeline Financing: The collaboration will support practical initiatives and partnerships, including efforts in Africa through IRENAโ€™s Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) and GCFCโ€™s Africa Green Investment Initiative (AGII). The partnership will also host events such as workshops and matchmaking sessions to connect climate investors with opportunities and advance innovative finance solutions.

Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, highlighted the importance of the partnership, โ€œDespite the significant momentum from the UAE Consensus and a strong business case for renewables, progress on energy transition varies across regions due to limited access to affordable finance. This strategic partnership with GCFC aims to address this challenge by enhancing finance flows, building capacities, and fostering innovation where it is most needed.โ€

Mercedes Vela Monserrate, CEO of GCFC, emphasized the impact of the collaboration, โ€œBy joining forces with IRENA, we are making a major stride in accelerating climate finance and advancing renewable energy initiatives globally. Our united vision for climate action aims to empower countries and communities to implement effective climate solutions and build a more sustainable future.โ€

This partnership represents a significant step towards achieving global climate goals by enhancing the scale, accessibility, and affordability of climate finance and renewable energy solutions.
