PLN’s REC Green Electricity Service Grows 65% In First Half Of 2024 With New Renewable Energy Additions

As of the first semester of 2024, PT PLN (Persero) has reported a significant increase in its Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) green electricity service, with 5,407 customers benefiting from a total capacity of 2.35 terawatt hours (TWh). This represents a 65% rise from the same period in 2023, which saw 1,829 customers with a capacity of 1.42 TWh.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting the national transition to clean energy. “PLN is dedicated to enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesia’s industry by offering a 100% green electricity service through our REC product. This aligns with the Government’s Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target by 2060,” said Darmawan.

The REC service, part of PLN’s Green Energy as a Service (GEAS), has gained considerable traction, with 3,378 customers using REC in 2023, amounting to 3.5 TWh. Darmawan expressed optimism about continued growth in REC adoption throughout 2024, driven by the increasing demand from the business and industrial sectors for decarbonization.

In response to growing green energy needs, PLN has expanded its REC sources with the addition of two new power plants this year: the Ulumbu Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in East Nusa Tenggara and the Orya Genyem Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) in Papua. These new facilities join six existing REC power plants, including Ulubelu PLTP, Cirata PLTA, Kamojang PLTP, Lambur PLTM, Bakaru PLTA, and Lahendong PLTP, collectively producing up to 4.7 million RECs or 4.7 TWh per year.

Darmawan highlighted that PLN’s expansion in renewable energy sources will further support the increasing demand for green electricity and contribute significantly to Indonesia’s decarbonization efforts.
