In a significant move to bolster bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, India and the United States held a high-level meeting to discuss collaborative efforts for a sustainable energy future. Union Minister for Power Shri Manohar Lal, accompanied by MoS for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Naik and senior officials from the Ministry of Power, met with a US delegation led by H.E. Mr. John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy.
During the meeting, Shri Manohar Lal emphasized the strong and long-standing partnership between India and the United States. He highlighted their shared commitment to a ‘clean’ energy future, which aligns with the goals of economic growth and development. Shri Lal expressed India’s dedication to strengthening this partnership under the ‘Power & Energy Efficiency Pillar’ of the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP).
H.E. Mr. John Podesta acknowledged India’s role as a valuable partner in the global clean energy transition. He praised the collaborative spirit between the two nations and emphasized the importance of building resilient supply chains and fostering an investment-led partnership strategy. He noted that both countries have significant opportunities for cooperation in areas such as clean energy, energy storage systems, and energy efficiency, and offered US support to enhance India’s manufacturing capacity.
The discussions focused on several key areas of collaboration:
- Grid and Transmission Modernization: Both sides explored the potential for technical exchanges and policy consultations to upgrade grid transmission systems, ensuring they can handle future load growth. Discussions also included possible financial support to advance these modernization efforts.
- Enhancing Manufacturing Capacity: The meeting highlighted opportunities to expand Indiaโs manufacturing capacity in critical areas like large transformers. This would bolster domestic production capabilities and reduce dependency on imports.
- Energy Storage Systems: The talks delved into possibilities for state-to-state partnerships on long-duration energy storage studies and further collaboration on grid-scale battery storage solutions.
- High-Efficiency Cooling Systems: Discussions emphasized the importance of stimulating manufacturing projects and policies to increase Indiaโs capacity to build, deploy, and export high-efficiency air conditioning systems and fans.
The meeting underscored the importance of the India-US partnership in driving the global clean energy transition. Both sides expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation in these critical areas, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.
