Gerhard Fourie, the Chief Director of Green Industries at the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (dtic), has stressed the urgent need for South Africa to transition towards a low carbon-intensive economy to avoid severe repercussions. Speaking at the Competition Commissionโs Blue-Bag Media Information Session on Renewable Energy in Pretoria today, Fourie warned that South Africa’s continued reliance on a high-carbon economy could lead to isolation from major trading partners.
During his address, Fourie highlighted that many of South Africa’s traditional trading partners are moving towards products with lower carbon footprints. He cautioned that without adaptation, South Africa may struggle to remain competitive in the global market. “There is an immediate need for a comprehensive strategy that focuses on reducing the carbon intensity of key sectors, particularly in metal minerals and mining, to ensure future economic resilience,” he said.
Fourie also pointed out significant opportunities within the renewable energy sector, particularly in the extraction and processing of critical raw materials needed for green product manufacturing. He emphasized the potential of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is rich in minerals essential for the green energy transition. According to Fourie, this presents a unique opportunity not only to mine these materials but also to process and refine them locally, thereby building higher-value industries and positioning South Africa as a key player in the global green energy supply chain.
“It is on these assertions that I urge for a collective effort to develop and industrialize this sector to unlock its full potential,” Fourie added.
The Blue-Bag Media Information Session aimed to provide journalists with accurate information about the Competition Commission’s research into the renewable energy market. It offered insights into the demand, supply, and barriers to accessing renewable energy products while promoting awareness of the governmentโs ongoing efforts to advance renewable energy, foster competition, and address the challenges facing this critical industry.
