Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced the formation of a new business vertical dedicated to Renewable Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), carved out from its existing Power Transmission & Distribution division within the Infrastructure Projects segment. The move is aimed at enhancing management visibility and ensuring the seamless integration of resources and capabilities as the company continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio.

The global shift towards clean energy has intensified, with decarbonized electricity playing a pivotal role in combating climate change. Technological advancements in renewable energy generation, particularly in solar and wind, have driven this transition, and renewable energy is expected to occupy a larger share in the global energy mix. As demand for electricity grows, driven by new and stringent requirements for reliability and power quality, the variability of renewable sources necessitates a hybrid approach that includes energy storage solutions to ensure consistent power supply.

India is at the forefront of this transition, with the government actively promoting renewable energy to increase the share of non-fossil fuel-based electricity. As part of its vision for a developed and equitable India, the country has laid out clear capacity addition plans and implemented several schemes, including the Green Energy Corridors, to support this growth.

The Middle East also presents significant opportunities for renewable energy, particularly solar power, due to its high solar irradiance, ample land availability, and alignment with peak cooling demand. L&T has already established itself as a leading global player in the renewable EPC sector, with a portfolio that includes 22 GWp of renewable EPC projects, 3 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems, and extensive experience in Ground Mounted Solar, Floating Solar, and Wind Balance of Plant projects.

L&T’s global footprint includes some of the largest single-site renewable energy parks in the world. In Saudi Arabia, the company is involved in major projects such as the 700 MW Ar Rass Solar PV IPP, the 2,000 MW Ar Rass-2 Solar PV IPP, and the 1.6 GW Sudair solar plant. The company recently announced orders for two additional plants with a combined capacity of 3.5 GWac and is constructing power and grid systems for one of the world’s largest green hydrogen plants at NEOM.

In India, L&T has been instrumental in delivering iconic renewable energy projects, including the recently commissioned 90 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar project and the country’s first grid-scale solar cum storage project. The company has also implemented decentralized distributed generation packages for remote villages.

To capitalize on its success and remain a preferred partner in the renewable energy sector, L&T has created the Renewable EPC business vertical. Mr. A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President of Larsen & Toubro, has been appointed as the Head of the new Renewable Business.

Commenting on the development, Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman & Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro, stated, “The growth of the renewable EPC business has accelerated in recent years. Thanks to our early start and investments, we have built an organization uniquely positioned in the value chain of creating sustainable energy infrastructure. This space is promising, and multiple opportunities are visible. The creation of this vertical will provide increased autonomy, customer proximity, and leadership oversight, enabling us to excel in this space.”
