The European Commission has opened a public consultation to gather input on the current EU regulations related to energy supply security and broader energy security issues. The consultation, which is open to a broad range of stakeholders, including researchers, NGOs, interest groups, and EU citizens, will run for 12 weeks, concluding on November 26.

This initiative, known as a “fitness check,” aims to evaluate the effectiveness and relevance of existing regulations, such as the Gas Security of Supply Regulation and the Electricity Risk Preparedness Regulation, in ensuring the EU’s energy resilience and autonomy. These regulations have been in effect since 2017 and 2019, respectively, and emergency measures taken under the REPowerEU plan will also be reviewed.

The consultation will assess the performance of the EUโ€™s energy security framework, particularly in light of recent crises. It will also provide an opportunity to identify areas for improvement and help shape future energy priorities, aligning with the EU’s Political Guidelines for 2024-2029, including the goal of building a Clean Industrial and Preparedness Union.
